How can I help?

Storyteller

I’ve always wanted to be a storyteller. In college, I chose journalism because it promised to force me out of my introverted shell and into the world at large. The plan worked. It’s been my privilege to write about a wide range of people, places, and things.  I got plenty of practice at putting words together in interesting ways.

I still write nonfiction stories for clients. I enjoy the back and forth of interviews and learning what people have to say. I also get a thrill at my desk when transforming notes on a page into a finished story.

Copywriter

A friend hooked me up with a copywriting company. I was pleased to find out that years of writing for newspapers had  prepared me for writing blogs, eBooks, and emails. Copywriting has different goals than newspaper writing, but the skills carry over nicely.

I wrote a bunch of personality profiles during my newspaper career. I asked questions and filled up my notebook. When telling a story, I tried to get out of the way. My best stories “sounded” like my subjects. It was good practice for writing in a client’s tone of voice.

Ghostwriter

A client of mine is a logical thinker and a pretty good writer. Had she wanted to take a substantial pay cut, she could’ve been a great writer. But she’s busy growing a successful business. She wrote an eBook that was filled with helpful tips for anyone who wanted to start a business, but it needed work.

My job was to be true to her vision and her tone of voice while also making her ideas easier to understand. In addition, I committed to multiple rounds of editing to achieve a professional polish.

More Kind Words

“Scott Morris delved into a major book project for me (well over 100,000 words) and provided insights, instruction and ideas about how to make my manuscript better. Beyond those suggestions, he illuminated the path I should walk to turn a raw narrative into a shining story. That’s Scott Morris in a nutshell — someone who takes rough ideas and polishes them into jewels. Whether you’re seeking inspiration, counsel, crisp line-editing or a comprehensive rewrite, Scott offers a conscientious approach to your work with the heart of an artist and the precision of a master craftsman: Hire him.”

"Scott’s three decades of professional writing and insight really showed in insights and comments he made when reviewing and editing an essay for a law school application.  His experience and knack for producing award-winning feature writing would benefit anyone tasked with producing professional writing that really speaks to a specific audience."
